According to the oldest human remains found in the city, the history of Barcelona date back more than 4000 years, specifically in the Neolithic period around 2500 BC. In the 4th century BC the Iberians did the first settlement and later the Romans founded the Roman village of Barcino in 15 BC.
After the Romans came the Visigoths and the Muslims but these stages hardly left their mark on the city. For a short period, Barcelona was part of the Carolingian Empire, becoming a county and counting on the protection of the Empire over the Muslim incursions, but in the 10th century it became independent and started its own path. The city had its years of splendor from the 12th century ,after the union of the county of Barcelona with the Crown of Aragon, becaming an important political and economic center with a vast territory that included possessions throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
After the glory years came those of decadence, a dark period with a significant economic decline and continuous conflicts and revolts until the arrival of the industrial revolution. The Universal Exhibition of 1888 was the culmination of the economic recovery of the city and an expansion that would connect it with the surrounding towns forming Barcelona as we know it today.
